CampusParc Experience

OVERVIEW

CampusParc, the company in charge of parking management at The Ohio State University, created a partnership with the Department of Design focused on improving public perception of the CampusParc brand. For this assignment, my group set our sights on the parking experience of the James Cancer Center of OSU’s Medical Campus.

RESEARCH

Our clients provided us with a booklet of research that was conducted over the summer, which we used as the base for our work moving forward. We also met with the patient experience team of the James, and listened to their stories of the most common parking complaints patients had. After a subsequent tour of their parking garage, we were able to pinpoint the most important issues of the space.

IDEATION

The patient experience team highlighted the importance of parking’s influence on visitors’ experiences. It is the first and last part of their time at the hospital, and any struggles encountered in the parking space could compound the stresses that people often endure during hospital visits.

In comparing the environment of the James and its garage, we felt there was a major disconnect in the feel of the two spaces. The lobby of the James is very bright and open. It features art, and large windows with views of trees and plants outside. The parking garage, on the other hand, was very dark and enclosed, and felt rather cramped. We decided to bring some elements of the James into the garage, and make the two spaces feel more connected.

We also wanted to address an often forgotten part of parking garages, pedestrian safety. In a place so dedicated to vehicles, the people walking outside of them are often a second thought for drivers whipping around corners in search of open spots.

RESULTS

To share our recommendations with the client, we assembled the following video. Please enjoy.
Or if you prefer, please view the written excerpts below.

Naming System

To prevent confusion at the start of the visitors' journey, we recommended changing the garage signage to better indicate which buildings it serves.

A parking garage with the name, "North Cannon Garage"
A parking garage with the name "The James Visitor Garage"

Pillars
The pillars in the space can be decorated differently on each level, to provide an interesting visual reminder of which floor the visitor parked on.

Lane System
Adding a lane system with pedestrian walkways would remind drivers to keep pedestrians in mind, and provide safer passage for visitors who are outside of their vehicles.

Living Wall Signage
By creating a mural featuring a living wall, we can bring the bright and natural feel of the James into the parking garage, and provide another clear indicator of the visitor's floor as they approach the elevators.

Elevators
Carrying the mural design to the elevator hall further improves the visitor experience, and additional navigational elements are also added to put the visitors at ease as they wait for their elevator.

Conclusion
With these improvements, CampusParc could provide a more relaxing and positive experience for patients and their families.
